Coated Porcelain Tiles: Surface Quality and Crack Resistance Analysis

1. Product Description and Applications

Coated porcelain tiles have a wide range of uses in floor and wall coverings due to their durability, aesthetic appeal, and functionality. The surface quality and crack resistance of these products are crucial to ensuring their durability and longevity. The test and inspection methods defined by the Libya National Standards and Metrology Center are used to assess the compliance of these products with quality standards.

2. Surface Quality Testing Methods

  • Visual Inspection: The surface of the tiles is examined by the naked eye or magnifying glass to identify defects such as cracks, stains, peeling, indentations, and decoration errors. This test is conducted in accordance with standard defect definitions.
  • Surface Flatness: The flatness of the tiles' surface is measured using a verification plate, and the arithmetic mean of measurements taken from four different points is calculated. The deviation value must not exceed the specified limits.
  • Edge Flatness: The straightness of the edges is evaluated using metal strips and precise measuring devices.

3. Crack Resistance Testing Methods

  • Bending Test: The bending values from the center and edges of the tile are measured. These measurements are used to assess the tile's resistance to pressure.
  • Autoclave Method: The crack resistance of the glass coating is measured by autoclave tests conducted at 159°C and 3 bar pressure. During the test, the samples are subjected to two test cycles, and the presence of cracks in the glass coating is checked.

4. Testing Process and Tools

  • Tools: Precision metal rulers, angle gauges, micrometers, and autoclave devices are used for measurements.
  • Sampling: Ten tiles are randomly selected for each test group. The samples must be homogeneous in terms of their physical and mechanical properties for measurement and testing.

5. Compliance Criteria

The tested tiles' surface and crack resistance must comply with Libya’s Measurement Standard No. 84/2014. If the initial tests do not show compliance, two additional samples can be taken, and the testing process can be repeated.

6. Market Requirements and Compliance

The surface quality and crack resistance of coated porcelain tiles are critical to meet durability and aesthetic expectations. HRN Inspection ensures quality assurance by overseeing the test and inspection processes of these products.

HRN Inspection increases the competitiveness of porcelain tile products in export processes by documenting that surface and crack tests are conducted in compliance with standards. High quality, reliability, and compliance contribute to the success of these products in international markets.
